Screenshot to text

Paste a screenshot, copy the text

Take a screenshot, press ⌘V or Ctrl+V, and the words come back as text you can select. It is the fastest route in, and probably the one you will use most.

How it goes

  1. 1

    Screenshot it

An error dialog, an invoice, a slide, a page that blocks copying.

  2. 2

    Paste

⌘V or Ctrl+V anywhere in the workspace. No file to save first.

  3. 3

    Recognise

Screen captures are already clean, so recognition is quick.

  4. 4

    Grab what you need

Or drag a box around one line and extract only that.

  5. 5

    Copy

Plain text, formatted text, or straight into a file.

Screenshots get different treatment

A screen capture is not a photograph. It has flat backgrounds, hard edges and no sensor noise, so the contrast stretching and thresholding that rescue a phone photo would only degrade it. OCR2text detects this from the image itself — colour count, edge sharpness, background flatness — and leaves a clean capture alone.

Light text on a dark background is the one case where a screenshot does need work. That gets inverted automatically, and Auto enhance tells you it did so.

Small screenshots

A cropped screenshot can be too small for the recogniser to see letter shapes properly. Where the image is under about 700 pixels on its longest edge, OCR2text upscales it before recognition rather than handing over a handful of pixels per character.

Just one line, please

Most of the time a screenshot contains one thing you actually want — an order number, a stack trace, an address. Extract selection lets you drag a box around it and read only that region, which is both faster and more accurate than recognising the whole screen.

Questions

Nothing happens when I paste.+
Some browsers only expose clipboard images on a real paste event. Click into the workspace first, then press ⌘V or Ctrl+V. Safari on iOS may need the Paste image button and a permission prompt instead.
Does the text end up in a URL or a log?+
Never. Recognised text is not put in the address bar, a share link, analytics or any error report.
Can I paste several screenshots?+
Yes — each becomes a page, and you can reorder them before recognising them all together.

Extract text from something

No account, no upload, no waiting for a server. Open the workspace and drop a page in.
